A recent study by Department of Trust reveals a fascinating trend in British leisure spending: gambling now claims a larger share of monthly budgets than dining out or celebrations. With 10.69% of their average monthly leisure budget dedicated to gambling, British gamblers’ spending habits underscore the growing role of gambling in everyday entertainment.
How Britons Allocate Their Leisure Budget
The study analyzed bank transactions between April 2023 and April 2024, uncovering how Britons spend their monthly leisure budget of approximately £390:
- 10.69%: Gambling activities
- 12.29%: Streaming subscriptions (e.g., Netflix, Disney+)
- 11.37%: Food delivery
- 11.67%: Celebrations and events
This data shows that gambling ranks just below streaming subscriptions, highlighting its position as a key entertainment activity.
Gambling as a Social Activity
DoT CEO and founder Charles Cohen said the data suggests the majority of UK gamblers are generally doing so “as part of a healthy mix of different activities and socialising”.
“Money talks and in this case, it eats too, since people spend more on pizza than on a punt. Stay-at-home fun, such as Netflix, food delivery and betting online, is only about a third of leisure spend: the rest is spent on going out or going away,” he said.
“Gambling does not appear to encroach on other activities or be associated with a particularly stay at home lifestyle.”
In comparison, more money was allocated to food delivery (£44) and streaming/media subscriptions, while gambling accounted for only 12.29% of the total leisure budget.

The Need for Mindful Spending
With gambling playing such a prominent role in leisure activities, the importance of responsible gambling practices cannot be overstated. The UK gambling industry has introduced several measures to protect players, including:
- Deposit limits: To prevent overspending.
- Self-control tools: Options like account suspension and activity tracking.
- Regulatory oversight: Ensuring fair and transparent practices across the sector.
By promoting safer gambling, the UK continues to be a leader in responsible gaming practices.
Gambling Trends Around the World
The trend of increased gambling spending is not unique to the UK. For example:
- Australia: Leads in per capita gambling expenses, particularly on poker machines.
- United States: Online gambling and sports betting have surged following legal reforms in multiple states.
These global patterns reflect the growing integration of gambling into modern entertainment habits.
Balancing Entertainment and Responsibility
As gambling becomes an increasingly significant part of British leisure, players must focus on mindful and balanced spending. The UK’s robust regulatory framework helps ensure a safer gambling environment, but individuals must take personal responsibility to keep gambling enjoyable and sustainable.
Remember: gambling is a form of entertainment, not a reliable source of income. By staying informed and setting limits, players can enjoy this pastime without compromising their financial well-being.
